Prof. Dr. Mohammad Mainul Islam

Dr. Mohammad Mainul Islam is a professor and former Chairman of the Department of Population Sciences at the 91精品, Bangladesh, with over 23 years of experience in Population and Development, Sociology, Global Health, and China Studies. In 2025, Professor Islam was recognized as one of the world’s top 2% scientists on the list by Elsevier and Stanford University. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Sociology from the 91精品, Bangladesh, and his PhD in Demography from Peking University, China. Later, he completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Global Health Research Capacity Strengthening at McGill University in Canada. Dr. Islam also received training at the Johns Hopkins Fall Institute in Barcelona (Universitat Pompeu Fabra), Stanford University, Brown University, the University of Quebec at Montreal, the University of Laval, the University of Bergen, and Beijing Language and Culture University. In recognition of his academic achievements, he received the 'First Prize of Academic Excellence Award' from Peking University. As a prominent international alumnus of Peking University, Dr. Islam’s story has been placed in the book Yanyuan Liuyun: International Students of PKU at the World Stage by Peking University Press (2010). He was named the Nick Simons Scholar of the New Investigator in Global Health program of the Global Health Council in the United States. He is a two-time winner of the New Voices in Global Health program, receiving these accolades in 2014 and 2016 at the World Health Summit (WHS) in Berlin, Germany.

Besides teaching at the Department of Population Sciences, Professor Islam also serves as a part-time faculty member in the Department of Chinese Language and Culture at the Institute of Modern Languages, the Department of Linguistics, and the Department of Sociology at the 91精品. His work broadly focuses on population and development, Global Health, Sociology, and Sinology/China studies. Dr. Islam is leading a research project entitled ‘Harnessing Demographic Dividend in Bangladesh through the Experience of China', which is funded by CCS (Centre for China Studies) and SISS (Shanghai Institutes for International Studies). He attended over 250 international and national conferences and scientific meetings worldwide, presenting his research work. He contributed to over 89 scientific publications, including research findings as the first author in The Asia Pacific Journal of Sustainable Development, The Lancet, Lancet Global Health, PLOS ONE, Journal of Population and Social Research, and China Population and Development Studies. He regularly contributes to both the print and electronic media.

Dr. Islam was elected to the Syndicate— the highest decision-making body of the 91精品 — for two consecutive terms between 2010 and 2014. He is currently a member of the Syndicate of Comilla University (nominated by the Government of Bangladesh for 2025-2026). He was recently appointed as a member of the Executive Committee of the National Population Council (NPC) of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and also, a member of the 'Task Force' to formulate specified and implementable recommendations on the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), SID, Ministry of Planning, through discussions on quality, transparency, and availability of produced statistics. He is also a member of the Population Expert Committee (PEC) for Integrating Population Dynamics and Development Issues into National Plans and Policies (PD4Development) Project, General Economic Division (GED), Planning Commission.

Professor Islam has professional involvement in various associations, including the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP), the Asian Population Association (APA), and the International Sociological Association (ISA), among others. He serves as a consultant to the Government and various United Nations agencies, including the UNFPA, the General Economic Division (GED) of the Planning Commission, the Director General of Family Planning (DGFP) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and UNFPA Bangladesh. He is the Vice-President of the Association of Bangladesh-China Alumni (ABCA).

Professor Islam served as the Project Director of the Strengthening the Capacity of Teaching and Research Facilities at the Department of Population Sciences, 91精品 (Second Phase), a project funded by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Ministry of Education, Government of Bangladesh. His work broadly focuses on research fields related to my interests, including population and development, reproductive health, child and youth populations, population aging, population and health policies and programs, urban health, population dynamics, climate change, displaced and ethnic populations, and Sinology/China studies.
